Check out our upcoming summer programs!
Beyond the Lens: Jackson Ward
Digital Photography at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia
July 15–19, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.
Grades 8–12

Students will explore the rich history of Jackson Ward through digital photography over the course of a week. Under the guidance of program mentors, local photographers, and museum professionals, they'll develop their own projects inspired by BHMVA’s collection while getting to know the work of influential African American photographers, learning the fundamentals of photography, and being introduced to various photo-related careers.

Museum Careers Exploratory Workshop

July 29–Aug 2, 10 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Grades: Rising 8–12

During this weeklong program, teens will learn the ins and outs of exhibition planning, design, and curation through field trips to various exhibitions around the city. They'll also have the opportunity to learn about museum careers directly from professionals in the field. In conjunction with the summer photography program at the Black History Museum, participants will use the skills they've learned during the week to assist in curating a student photo show.

Interested students can apply for these FREE weeklong programs here!
Upcoming Community Events
We're excited to be participating in many events around town this month. We'll be setting up our booth this weekend at the Binford Arts + Music Festival, where visitors can join us for a collaborative animation project. This Saturday, June 8, you'll also find us at the Richmond Night Market. Stop by the Creative Kids Corner to design a prototype invention out of recycled materials. Also happening this weekend, we are working with partners VMFA, PPDC & The Market at 25th st. to help coordinate transportation to the  VMFA Family Day, where community members can celebrate the music, artistic traditions, and culture of Mali. Please contact alex@oakwoodarts.org if you are interested in transportation from the east end to this event.

Coming up on June 14, you can join us at In the Sun Again, the Robinson Theater's community day and block party celebrating Church Hill. We'll be running a photo booth and sharing information about our summer programs and our East End Quilt Collective. Hope to see you there!

Intro to Animation

With Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School
Students in our animation class at AJCES wrapped up their eight-week session last month. Our class got to meet voice actor Mike Henry, who writes, produces, and voices characters for Family Guy and The Cleveland Show. Mike talked about his career path, encouraged students to pursue their passions, and even signed some autographs.

This past month we also had a visit from Jefferson Harris, a local designer, illustrator, and producer. After telling us about his artwork and his time interning with Cartoon Network, he had students try their hand at using digital illustration tools and software.
Take a look at some of the animations from our Intro to Animation class with Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School!

Hand-drawn animation by Danielle, 8th grade
Story Hour
With Peter Paul Development Center @ Bellevue Elementary, Chimborazo Elementary,
and Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club
For this month’s story hour, we read Dream Something Big, a book about artist Simon Rodia, who transformed broken glass, seashells, pottery, and a dream to "do something big" into L.A.'s famous Watts Towers. Students dreamed up their own architectural mosaics inspired by the illustrations in the book. Special thanks to Oakwood Arts board president Aubrey Fountain for reading with us and sharing a bit about his background in architecture.
Oakwood Arts Community Highlights
Karen Wells is one of Oakwood Arts' newest board members, as well as a fifth-generation Church Hill native. She serves as community connector and educator for Community Idea Stations, bringing PBS KIDS resources and experiences to the Market @ 25th, our new neighborhood grocery store.
