We have been running an Animation course for elementary and middle school students. These classes provide a hands-on introduction to wide range of tools and techniques including storyboarding, claymation, set building, pixelation animations, digital photography, and voice over audio recording. Students also get to engage with guest speakers who work in a range of creative careers.

Story Hour

With Peter Paul Development Center at Bellevue Elementary + Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club

For the month of February we read Drum Dream Girl, which was inspired by the childhood of Millo Castro Zaldarriaga, a Chinese-African-Cuban girl who broke Cuba's traditional taboo against female drummers. Students learned about rhythms in their everyday life and got to make spin drums of their own to take home.

Guest Speakers/Performers for this program have included Gina Adler, Set Costumer + Drummer, Rae Cousins - (Board Member) Attorney, BrownGreer PLC, and @SkinnyyHendrixx (IG) - Musician

Volunteer Highlight
Going forward each month, we will be featuring inspiring members of our community who have worked with Oakwood Arts. We are kicking off this feature this week with Black History Month, and are honored to share the work of some of our mentors and community leaders.
Maya Jackson, born and raised in Richmond, VA, is currently a 2019 BFA Candidate at VCUarts majoring in Photography and Film. Her work focuses on challenging photography as documentation, “truthful” imagery, and introspection through self portraiture as a form of meditation.
Maya has been volunteering with Oakwood since 2017, and has been an amazing mentor for students at Peter Paul Elementary. She has also been a part of our ongoing involvement with East End Cemetery, both in cleanups and in our Quilt Collective.

Brian Palmer serves on our advisory board and was one of Oakwood Arts founding board members. He is a visual journalist based in Richmond, Virginia. During his 30-year career he has photographed conflict, politics, activism, daily life, and more around the world - and in his own backyard.
Brian is also an integral part of our East End Quilt Collective project as a leader of the restoration efforts at East End Cemetery, and has mentored Oakwood Arts students during our documentary photography program.
