Oakwood Arts' Artist Residency 2020-21
We are excited to announce that multimedia artist Stephanie J. Woods is joining Oakwood Arts as Artist-in-Residence through May 2021. Originally from Charlotte, NC, Stephanie works in textile, photography, and video, as well as community-engaged projects. Check out her full bio and her work on our website.
One of Stephanie’s goals in working with the Oakwood Arts community is to engage with students and to share her experience as an artist with young people, showing them that a career as an artist or creative is an option for everyone. During her residency, Stephanie will embark on research that encompasses Black history and communities in Richmond and create participatory, community-led work. We are grateful that Stephanie is bringing her immense talent, creativity, and vision to our organization!
Introducing our interns!
As we make our way into fall, all of us at Oakwood Arts are excited for this semester’s new programs and the opportunities we have to serve East End students and families. We are also very happy to announce that our team is growing with some new interns and staff.
Richmonder, Isaiah Timmons is a 2020 graduate of Hampton University, where he majored in Graphic Design. As our Marketing Intern, Isaiah is already creating incredible illustrations and designs that we are using for program, marketing, and fundraising initiatives.
DJ Vang is a first-year Kinetic Imaging major at VCU. She loves digital art and often draws portraits, characters, and landscapes. As our Graphic Design Intern, DJ will be helping us to create digital art to be used across all programs; she designed our Halloween Costume Drive poster!
Another Richmond native Joshua Thornton came to Oakwood Arts as an intern this summer and is now joining as a part-time staff member helping with graphic design and our website.
Josh is a multimedia artist currently attending George Mason University, where he is majoring in Graphic Design and minoring in Art History. While working as an intern this summer Josh was instrumental in helping us to pull off a successful virtual Summer Solstice event, and we are so happy now to count him as a staff member!

Please join us in welcoming this creative group to the Oakwood Arts family! And be sure to follow us on Instagram @oakwoodarts for more in-depth introductions.
Program Updates
Art Journaling

We still have some spots available to join Instructor-in-Residence Sam Page’s Art Journaling class! The class will run Wednesdays, 5 – 6 pm, from October 21 to November 18. Each week, we’ll be creating new and colorful journal entries together based on prompts that explore our feelings, emotions, and memories, and hang out and build community together! Get more information and sign-up on our website. This program is free to all participants thanks to the generous support of CultureWorks!
Virtual Halloween Bash + Costume Drive
Halloween might look a bit different this year, but we are making sure local elementary students still have a spooky and fun holiday! Working with our partner organizations, including the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, we will be hosting a Virtual Halloween Bash! (Flyer to the left made by our intern DJ Vang)
We are also once again organizing a community Costume Drive and distributing treats and fun hands-on craft kits designed by our amazing interns and staff. Help us make this year as festive as ever by donating towards the cost of costumes, art supplies and Halloween treats by clicking here!

Art Kit Mentors - Calling all high-school students!
Do you know a high-school student looking for a creative way to give back to their community? They can volunteer to be a virtual Art Kit Mentor! Teens will develop mentoring skills by guiding K-5-grade students in weekly virtual activities using our Art Kits, with step-by-step instructions and supplies to complete two creative hands-on projects! To sign-up and learn more email our Programs Director Liana at liana@oakwoodarts.org

Outdoor Virtual Learning Park

We are moving full speed ahead on the creation of our Outdoor Learning Park for local students and neighbors! Working with Richmond Community ToolBank, we will be working with volunteers on October 23rd, October 24th, at our home at 3511 P Street to clean up the outdoor space, paint, and build benches and picnic tables and a lending library. This is a fully volunteer- and donor-led effort, and we still need your help! In order to maintain socially distancing must be maintained (families can sign-up to be a team).

Please consider supporting the project here
