Spring is here, and we are staying busy with exciting programs--some old, some new! Check out updates below, and be sure to sign up for our newest class: Paper Gizmos!

PAPER GIZMOS

March 25th-April 29, 2021. Thursdays, 4:30-6:00 pm

New program alert! Learn all about the creative possibilities of paper. Paper Gizmos will incorporate artmaking, history, and science to make paper fly, float, and move. Each class will include corresponding hands-on activities and video tutorials on our website for participants and other community members to try at home at any time.

Led by Sam Page, this class is open to teens and up and accessible for all skill levels. All you need to participate is some paper--recycled is always appreciated! If you need supplies, let us know and we will get them to you!

VIRTUAL SCHOOLWORK SUPPORT TUTORS

Our program to support RPS students and families with their individual learning goals has been up and running since January. We are working with a group of 10 volunteer tutors, including several University of Richmond students, who are offering academic and virtual learning support to 10 students ages 8-17 from Fairfield Elementary, Franklin Military Academy, MLK Middle School, Armstrong High school, and Elijah House Academy.

Under OA training, our tutors use creative tools and activities to encourage hands-on learning in subjects such as Reading, English/Language Arts, Math, and Science, as well as incorporate STEAM methodology. Special thanks to our program partner MLK Boys and Girls Club, who is helping to facilitate this program! We will be running the tutoring program through May 2021. Interested in joining as a volunteer math tutor? Learn more here.

OAKWOOD ART KITS

Our Art Kit program with 2nd - 5th grade students at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club is off to a great start! Every week, we provide students with a packet containing all the materials and instructions they need to complete a creative hands-on project! OA staff and guest artists meet virtually to lead the students through the week's activity.

Interested in picking up an Oakwood Arts Kit? Every other Wednesday, we stock the OA Park Giving Library (3511 P Street) with 50 additional kits available to all!

The OA Giving Library is made possible by a generous gift from the Bryan and Kathryn Harvey Family Memorial Endowment. We hope the contents will spark creativity and joy, honoring the memories of Bryan, Kathy, Stella, and Ruby Harvey.

Our popular weekly Photo Mondays series continues this semester! Led by OA lead mentor Maya Jackson and OA intern Tricia Evangelisto, our group of 10 photographers, ages 13-15, are coming together each week to learn new skills and techniques, gain new ideas to help them refine their photographic eye, and practice using language that enhances their artistic practice. Follow their progress here
Chip Jackson interviews Kenny Morton, Key Rigging Grip.
Our inaugural FAMM (Future Artists and Media Makers) class continues to meet weekly and learn all things Mise-en-scène! Each week's lesson is paired with Q &A interviews with film industry professionals. Check Jonah and Chip's interviews with our guests here to gain some insider industry knowledge!
