Visual Communication Class
Our program mentors created and ran an exciting 9-week program with students at Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School. Middle school students learned to tell visual stories using digital photography and professional lighting equipment, and built graphic design skills by creating movie posters using Photoshop.

|
Costume Design Class
We had so much fun working with both middle schoolers and elementary schoolers this semester at Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club to create their own costumes for the fall season! The class culminated with a fashion show where they got to show off their amazing creations. We also took a field trip to meet with creative professionals at University of Richmond's costume department and makeup studio!

City Studio Field Trip to InLight
Thanks to a sponsorship from 1708 Gallery, our City Studio club was able to take a field trip to this year’s InLight exhibit to view and document the exhibit using photography! Students also joined in the festivities by participating in a lantern making workshop, and visited with artists as they installed their final pieces.

Upcoming Programs and Events

We are looking forward to continue partnering with Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club and Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School to offer animation classes to their students this spring!
We are also excited to continue our partnership with Peter Paul Development Center running a monthly story hour in the coming season.

Oakwood Arts Presents: East End Quilt Collective
|
|
|
|
Oakwood Arts’ EAST END QUILT COLLECTIVE PROJECT explores and celebrates the history of our neighborhood and East End Cemetery using art and technology.
|
|
A year of presentations, community conversations, cemetery tours, and collaborative art projects will culminate in the creation and exhibition of a large-scale piece of art, a quilt representing East End Cemetery’s rich legacy.
Oakwood Arts is collaborating with community members alongside Brian Palmer and Erin Hollaway Palmer, professional journalists and founding members of the Friends of East End Cemetery, and Unicia Buster, a textile artist and graphic designer! Stay tuned for upcoming workshops and events!

What's going on with our building on P Street?
|
|
|
|
As many of you know, this summer we faced some unexpected obstacles with our building that forced us to relocate until full repairs are made. However, this hasn't slowed us down, as we've been able to continue offering programming without interruption through our
|
|
|
partner organizations. We understand how important the creation of this central, welcoming space will be in this community, and are working hard to return to our location on P and 35 streets as soon as we are able. We're dreaming big and have exciting plans for the building once we're back!

|
|
Season of Giving — Help Us End the Year Right

Since Oakwood Arts incorporated last year, our organization has accomplished more than we would have thought possible. We really hit the ground running — obtaining our 501(c)3 status in February of 2018 — which makes this our first ever year-end appeal!
It is because of our supporters that we’ve been able to accomplish so much this past year, and it is because of you that we’ll be able to keep this momentum going.
Our obligation to make art accessible and to introduce our students to creative industries requires your support. We’ve started small, but are working hard to bridge a huge gap in our community and our city’s creative workforce.
