Stitchwerks: Costume Design + Careers Program
at Armstrong High school
Our newest program, in collaboration with Armstrong Center for Empowerment and led by our Instructor-in-Residence, Sam Page and Assistant Mentor Simi Rideb, explores design careers within performing arts with a focus on costuming.
Through this program, students will explore basic sewing skills, draping, reading patterns, up-cycling fabrics and more! All of this will culminate in the construction of costumes for their upcoming production of Little Shop of Horrors. We are thrilled to also be collaborating with professionals such as Emmy nominated costume designer Amy Harrell and her crew, who are sharing their industry experience with these young creatives!
Amy Harrell was the costume designer for Showtime's Good Lord Bird, and PBS's Mercy Street, and was the costume supervisor on the Oscar award-winning Little women. She showed the students her renderings and talked about her work in the film industry.

We kicked off our program with the Martin Agency!
At Franklin Military Academy & Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School
In the last two weeks we have hosted Creative Advertising Careers Panels led by an accomplished team of creative professionals from the Martin Agency at two area schools. Huge thank you to our speakers from the Martin Agency, Danny Robinson, Chief Client Officer, Robert Clark, Account Executive, Brittany Tooker, Art Director/Designer, Scot Cooker, Creative Director/Art Director, Ken Marcus, Copywriter, and Kim Zaninovich, VP Executive Producer, for their engaging presentations about their careers in advertising. Ten interested students will have the opportunity to join our upcoming Saturday program, where they will meet with a group of Martin Agency Creative Professionals accompanied by Oakwood Arts program mentors, to collaboratively tackle creative challenges.
Additional thanks to Tameka DePriest (Community in Schools Coordinator), Chelsea Carter (MLK Art Teacher), Jonathan Ashe (FMA Art Teacher) for hosting us! Turns out speaker Robert Clark + art teacher Chelsea Carter went to high school together and had a surprise reunion.
