Spring Break 2019:
City Studio

Production Design for Middle Schoolers

This year’s theme, production design, took us everywhere from the Virginia Film Office to the VCUarts theater department to the Virginia Opera during one amazing week. We toured TV and theater sets, watched a photo shoot, created moodboards with advertising pros, met costume designers, and more.

Thanks to the support of our donors, sponsors, and programming partners, City Studio 2019 was 100% free for all participants!

6 days, 24 participants, 5 mentors, 3 staff members, 7 volunteers, 21 professionals from creative industries, 6 fields trips, 5 bus rides on public transportation, 288 meals   
  • 100% of participating youth surveyed said they learned about careers they were previously unaware of
  • 80% said they would consider pursuing one of the jobs they learned about
  • 100% said they would recommend City Studio camp to a friend
  • 8 out of 10 students who participated in 2018 returned in 2019

Intro to Animation 

With Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club and Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School

We wrapped up our animation program at the Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club with a celebration and exhibition of all the young animators' hard work. Meanwhile, our students at Anna Julia Cooper have begun bringing their storyboard ideas to life using Claymation and hand-drawn animation techniques.

Story Hour

With Peter Paul Development Center @ Bellevue Elementary + Salvation Army Boys & Girls Club

For the month of April we've been reading Izzy Gizmo, a book about a young girl who loves inventing machines that make a difference. After listening to the story, students used recycled materials to build prototypes of their own inventions.

A solar-powered stove top, a magical unicorn, a house that can flip inside out and upside down, a microphone for babies, a rolling piggy bank—these are just a few of the creations dreamed up during story hour. Guest artists included maker space librarian Mary Guillory and sculptor and art educator Susann Whittier.
Coming Up
Digital Photography at the Black History Museum
July 15–19, 2019

We are excited to partner with the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Richmond this summer. Students will get to know the museum's collections and explore historic Jackson Ward while learning the fundamentals of digital photography. Registration details to come soon!

...We're also busy ramping up for our other summer programming, which will include a multimedia digital storytelling workshop and a field trip–based museum studies camp. Stay tuned!
Volunteer Highlight 
Each month we're featuring inspiring members of our community who have dedicated their time to work with Oakwood Arts.
Justin Smith began interning for Oakwood Arts this past fall, designing promotional material and mentoring our photo and graphic design students at Anna Julia Cooper Episcopal School. He recently served as a mentor for City Studio 2019 as well.
Justin's a graphic designer with experience in both print and digital design. He runs a blog called Afrovisualism, curating images of black visual and popular culture from the past and present. Justin attended Halifax Community College and North Carolina A&T University and has an associate's degree in advertising and graphic design.
Exciting News!
We are thrilled to announce that our friend and advisory board member Brian Palmer has won a Peabody Award for his Reveal News radio story with Seth Freed Wessler, Monumental Lies. Give it a listen! While you're at it, read The Costs of the Confederacy, a related story that Brian and Seth wrote for Smithsonian magazine. All the photos are Brian's too.

Interested in Volunteering with Oakwood Arts?

We are always looking for dedicated volunteers to help teach classes and guide our students. If you have experience in graphic design, web design, costume design, photography, animation, or film and video editing and production, please fill out our volunteer form. We will also need volunteers for Solstice, our summer benefit auction.
