BLACK HISTORY MONTH
In honor of Black history month, Chip Jackson OA's Director of Workforce Innovation invited the OA team to share which influential black creatives have inspired and influenced us on our creative journeys. This idea was OA's way to acknowledge some of the Black filmmakers, photographers, artists, musicians, and activists who helped open doors for other black people and minorities in creative industries. We asked others to share their favorite Black creators by adding names in the comments or to make their own video and hashtag #BHMOAchallenge. New programs at Oakwood Arts!

F.A.M.M. Project

This month marked the start of our first FAMM class: Mise-en-scène ("everything arranged in the shot."). Seven students are joining Chip (Director of Workforce Innovation), Johna Hodari (FAMM Program Assistant), and Shannon (Executive Director) weekly to learn about all of the elements that make up “mise-en-scène,” the visual language that filmmakers use to translate stories to the screen. Established and emerging guest artists are also joining weekly to share their vision and give valuable advice to inspire our students. Click below to learn more about our weekly assignment and check out our interviews with Film Industry professionals.

OA JET

The OA JET (Job Education Training) program is designed to help train and connect young adults from populations underrepresented in the industry with Production Assistant positions on film and television sets in Richmond. Our inaugural cohort of seven started the program at the beginning of the month, and we are thrilled to report that each participant has already been placed in a production position on local sets! This group will continue to meet weekly to learn the ins and outs of equipment training, lingo, and an exploration of industry careers.
