This series of #oakwoodartskit will be inspired by the field of Psychology & Mental Health, created to bring awareness to psychological and mental health disorders affecting the lives of many in our community while also using art as a form of expression.

Ink Blot Art. This is an easy, relaxing, and intriguing activity to fill the page with a variety of colors & then let your mind analyze the ambiguous mirror images you have created! This kit was created by Tricia Evangelisto, Freelance Photographer, Artist, QMHP-C, Program Assistant at Oakwood Arts.

Meet the Artist! Tricia is a creative portrait photographer & self-portrait artist based in Richmond, VA. With a BA in Psychology from Old Dominion University, she is also passionate about working with youth of all ages including those with special needs. She challenges herself to create soulful & playful portraits through the use of thrifted items often creating headpieces, re-working dresses or incorporating everyday items in her work. She hopes to one day inspire youth in the community to push the boundaries of creation by using the environment as a canvas with the tools you already have before you!

Geometric Watercolor Painting. Paint like Kandinsky! He was a Russian painter, art theorist, and synesthete (someone who can 'hear color' and 'see sound'). This kit was created by Liv Taylor, Oakwood Arts' Programs Intern.

Meet the Artist! She is an artist, photographer, and senior at Virginia Commonwealth University, studying psychology and art education. Her goal is to pursue a career in art therapy.

WEEK 3: practice your design skills with Artist and ART educator Susann WhitTier

Meet this week’s artist!
”Hi, I am Susann Whittier! I am a board member of Oakwood Arts as well as a practicing visual artist that loves to share the creative experience with my students. I work out of my studio at home in Richmond VA, and teach sculpture, painting and ceramics to super amazing 9-12th graders at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School for the Art and Technology, in Petersburg VA.”

WEEK 2: Explore your surroundings with Award winning Art Educator Rebecca Field!

Meet this week’s artist!
”Hey everyone, I am Rebecca Field and I am an illustrator and artist, and I teach art at John Marshall High School, home of the Justices! This is such a great time to be making art but I miss my kiddos at Jay Em so I am excited to share some art projects with all of you. The projects that I’ve included this week are perfect for curious people who are a little bored and are ready to play.  If you like the projects but want to change them around to make them more fun for you, DO IT! You are an artist just like me.”

Special thanks to VCU student teacher Erika Hastings for helping Rebecca create these awesome lessons!

WEEK 1: get creative with our Instructor in Residence, Sam Page!

Meet this week’s artist!
”My name is Sam Page and I'm an artist and the Instructor in Residence at Oakwood Arts. I'm so happy to share some of my own art practices with you and I hope you use these prompts to explore, practice and just have fun! As you can see, I don't limit myself to just one form of art. I explore and I hope you will too! From all of us at Oakwood Arts, know that you are smart, creative and you are not alone!”
