"We make art and careers in creative industries accessible to all through community engagement, inspiring programming, and experiential education."
Happening this month at Oakwood Arts
We have just wrapped up our summer programing! We held two sessions of our digital photography class, Beyond the Lens: Jackson Ward, where teens explored the rich history of Jackson Ward while learning about the fundamentals of photography using DSLR cameras and utilized photo editing software. Additionally we ran our Museum Careers Exploratory Workshop, a new program where participants learned the ins and outs of exhibition planning, design, and curation through field trips to various exhibitions around the city. Participants had the unique opportunity to meet with and learn from museum professionals at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Black History Museum of Virginia, The Valentine, the Institute for Contemporary Art, and the Maggie L. Walker Historic Site. Our East End Quilt Collective visited the VMFA Family Day for a group viewing of the Cosmologies of the Tree of Life Exhibition and the quilts from Gee's Bend that are currently on display for inspiration on designs and patterns for our final quilt project.
We are busy gearing up for a fall programming, but we’ve got a few more events in the works for the season—sign up for our newsletter for updates!
